Planning Your Moose Hunt

Planning Your Moose Hunt

Getting to McGrath

You will fly from your hometown to Anchorage, Alaska. Since most flights from the lower 48 arrive during the night, you will most likely want to stay overnight in Anchorage. The next day (the day before your hunt begins) you will fly from Anchorage to McGrath in western Alaska. This is about a 1-hour flight. Please plan early to make your air reservations from Anchorage to McGrath as they fill up fast. There are few choices for air carriers flying to McGrath. Reeve Air Alaska (reeveairalaska.com) has scheduled flights from Anchorage International Airport to McGrath three days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri.) Call for reservations: (907)646-0538. Additionally, the following carriers book charters: Regal Air (907)243-8535 (regal-air.com), Alaska Air Taxi (907)243-3944 (alaskaairtaxi.com) or Anchorage Aero (907)243-2376 (anchorageaero.com).  These charters fly from Lake Hood Airport, across the street from Anchorage International Airport.

Accommodations

You will need a room reservation in McGrath the night before your hunt begins and the night your hunt ends. We recommend The Innoko Lodge (907)461-8404 or The Iditarod Trail Roadhouse (907)538-5550 (iditarod.io). These are mostly seasonal businesses, so you might need to leave a message.

Gear

We will send you a detailed gear list when you book. Each guided hunter is allowed 75 lbs. of gear and self-guided hunter is allowed 100 lbs. of gear on the bush plane from McGrath into camp. Please bring soft gun cases for your guns, as these will fit in our aircraft. Hard cases may be left at your lodging.

License and tags

You will purchase these online in the summer of the year you hunt. We will send out an informational email to guide you through the process. All tags are over-the-counter and must be purchased before the hunt begins.

Any tag may be used for a species or equal or lesser value. For instance, a black bear or brown bear tag may be used on a wolverine. I don't recommend buying a wolverine tag since they are such an elusive animal. But if you see one it would be the trophy of a lifetime. If you had a black bear tag, you could use it for the wolverine.

Non-resident license & tag prices:

Hunting license:  $160.00

Hunting & 14-day fishing $235.00

Moose tag $800.00

Brown bear tag $1000.00 (guided hunters only)

Black bear tag $450.00

Wolverine tag $350.00

Wolf tag - No tag required for this area. Up to ten wolves may be taken.
